History
The class 310s, or
AM10s as they were known back then, were introduced for West Coast Main Line
local trains out of Euston in the late 60s. they remained on these services
up until the late 80s, when they were replaced by class 321s. Some were converted
into class 310/1s and were used in the Midlands while the remaining 310/0s
were cascaded over to the Great Eastern main line. They did not stay there
long and were soon cascaded over onto the London, Tilbury and Southend line.
Here they remained until 2001 when they were replace by class 357s. The class
310/1s in use in the midlands were also retired in 2001. They are all now in store in the
MOD depot at shoeburyness (pigs bay), and most are being or will be scrapped.
Preservation seems unlikely, although the AC EMU group is considering preserving
cars from 310/1 no. 960201 as part of a class 310/312 hybrid to ensure the
preservation of both classes, but that is some way off and may not happen.
Unfortunately this may only turn out to be a class 312.
